Topic: Batterer Intervention Program (BIP) Contact with Survivors: Ethics, Risks, Complications and Strategies
Summary: Survivor contact for a BIP is deceptively complicated. Michigan standards stipulate the: “BIP should have a policy and procedure for informing victims about the program. The BIP must caution the victim that the batterer intervention service does not guarantee the victim’s safety, nor that the batterer will change. In addition, the BIP must provide information and referrals to the victim. Victims always have the right to refuse contact with the BIP”. The ethics, risks, complications and possible strategies of HOW this is conducted will be discussed and illustrated throughout the day.

Sara Elinoff Acker has been an activist in the battered women’s movement since 1985. She worked in shelter programs in Northern Vermont and Western Massachusetts and in 1992 started the Partner Contact Program at “Men Overcoming Violence” (MOVE), an Amherst, MA batterer’s intervention program. She became a certified batterer’s intervention group leader in 1996 and ran batterer’s groups for over ten years. The MOVE program was featured on the CBS news magazine show “48 Hours” for its long-term work with abusive men who were making real changes. Sara has led workshops on innovations in partner contact and the process of change for abusive men at both regional and national domestic violence conferences, including being keynote speaker at the 2010 Utah statewide domestic violence conference. Sara’s book, “Unclenching Our Fists”, features the stories of men who have become nonviolent and will be published by Vanderbilt University Press in the fall of 2012. In 2007 Sara was given the “Vagina Warrior” award for her efforts to end violence against women in her community, in connection with a local production of Eve Ensler’s Vagina Monologues. She now maintains a private counseling practice and works as a domestic violence consultant.
