Training Description: Sexual harms are often overly focused on assault to include rape and other forms of violence and miss discussion of the multiplicity of harms that might go beyond abuse and violence. This workshop seeks to expand methods of discussing sexual harm, and by doing so also consider ways to work toward sexual respect and health in specific and attainable levels of intimate partnership. A foundation in an organic understanding of harm allows for considerations of how sexuality can be humanized and broadened in ways that meet lived experiences that can often be overlooked in work within intimate partner violence contexts. Within presentations and discussions, this organic overview of harm will be referenced and elaborated on as a method for conceptualizing respectful and healthy alternatives.

Christopher Hall

Christopher Hall is a social worker currently working on his Ph.D. in Educational Research Methodologies (Program Evaluation Focus) at the University of North Carolina: Greensboro. He has worked in the field of domestic and sexual violence intervention since 1997, including work at Emerge: Counseling and Education to Stop Domestic Violence (Cambridge, MA), West Virginia Coalition Against Domestic Violence (Charleston, WV), and The Retreat (Long Island, NY).

His research interests are in quantifying oppression theory through qualitative interviewing techniques with intimate partner violence perpetrators and use of the transtheoretical model and motivational interviewing in domestic violence intervention. He currently works as a Graduate Research Assistant for the Office of Assessment, Evaluation, and Research Services within the UNCG School of Education.

This talk is being hosted by the Tri-County Batterer Intervention Provider Network (TCBIPN) in partnership with BISC-MI.

The TCBIPN is a monthly gathering of individuals in the Portland, OR who work with abusive partners to discuss different aspects of working with abusive partners.

This informal network has been gathering for more than twenty years to discuss and learn about these issues. Minutes from these meetings, offering detailed summaries of these discussions and presentations, are distributed to more than 150 people around the state and beyond.
