Conference Description

This conference offers a chance to explore the connections between trauma and domestic and sexual abuse from many perspectives.   Participants will learn about the basics of human brain development and memory systems and how trauma can impact them. Experts will teach how to assess the effects of trauma on individuals and family systems.

A Panel of Experts will share current research and theories in an interactive forum. Participants will increase their knowledge of the effects of trauma on clients, whether survivors or perpetrators.  There will be opportunities to discuss intervention and programming options while networking with other professionals who intervene with domestic and sexual abuse.

Dr. Peter Jaffe PhD, C. Psych.
Dr. Jaffe is a Professor in the Faculty of Education at the University of Western Ontario and the Academic Director of the Centre for Research on Violence Against Women & Children. He is the Director Emeritus for the Centre for Children and Families in the Justice System, which is a children's mental health centre specializing in issues which bring children and families into the justice system in London, Ontario.

He received his undergraduate training from McGill University in Montreal (1970) and his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Western Ontario (1974). Most of his clinical work and research involves children and adolescents involved with police or the courts, either as offenders or victims of family violence or custody disputes as well as individuals traumatized by violence in childhood or adult relationships.

He has co-authored nine books, 24 chapters and over 70 articles related to children, families and the justice system including Children of Battered Women and Working Together to End Domestic Violence. He has presented workshops across the United States and Canada, as well as Australia, New Zealand, and Europe to various groups including judges, lawyers, mental health professionals and educators.

Dr. Jaffe was the founding Chairperson of the London Co-ordinating Committee to End Woman Abuse and is currently actively involved in research on the impact of family violence on children. He has also been instrumental in the foundation of the Battered Women's Advocacy Clinic and is a former chairperson of their Board of Directors. He has served on various community advisory committees for the London Police Service. In 1995 Dr. Jaffe was appointed as Chairperson of the Board of Directors for the Centre for Research on Violence Against Women and Children.

Dr. Jaffe has been a trustee for the London Board of Education (now the Thames Valley District School Board) since 1980, and he has served two terms as Chairperson (1987-88, 1999-2000) . Dr. Jaffe has provided leadership in the development of violence prevention programs within the school system.

Between 1991 and 1993, Dr. Jaffe, was a member of the Canadian Panel on Violence Against Women. This federally appointed committee examined the issue of violence against women through meetings in 139 communities across Canada, encouraging individuals, community groups and professional associations, to identify solutions from their perspective. The final report heightened public awareness of the problem and outlined prevention strategies to end violence.

Dr. Jaffe has been an expert witness in two Ontario inquests into domestic violence and was appointed to the Joint Committee on Domestic Violence to provide advice to the Attorney General on the implementation of the jury’s recommendations. He currently sits on the Chief Coroners Domestic Violence Death Review Committee.

Dr. Jaffe has been honoured by receiving several awards for his work including the Commemorative Medal for the 125th Anniversary of the Confederation of Canada for his dedication and contributions to the community and to all fellow Canadians, and the distinguished Colonel Watson Award, presented annually by the Ontario Association for Curriculum Development, for his significant contribution to education in Ontario, and the Award of Merit from the Ontario Psychological Foundation for his contribution to research and clinical practice in the prevention of family violence.

Dr. David Lisak, Ph.D.
Dr. David Lisak is an associate professor of  psychology at the University of Massachusetts Boston where he conducts and supervises research on the causes and consequences of interpersonal violence. In particular, he has studied the motives and characteristics of "undetected" rapists - men who rape but who are never prosecuted. He also studies the long term effects of childhood abuse in adult men, and the relationship between early abuse and the later perpetration of interpersonal violence. His research has been published in leading journals in psychology, trauma and violence, and he was the founding editor of the journal, Psychology of Men and Masculinity. In addition to his research and teaching, Dr. Lisak serves as faculty for the National Judicial Education Program, and the American Prosecutors Research Institute, and has served as a consultant to judicial, prosecutor and law enforcement education programs across the country.

Rus Ervin Funk
Rus Funk is the author of Reaching Men:  Strategies for Preventing Sexist Attitudes, Behaviors and Violence, and has been working for more than 25 years to address social, racial, gender and sexual justice throughout the country.  The way I work, and try to live my life, is based on James Baldwin’s quote “The most radical step you can take...is your next one”— and that the strive for justice (in our relationships, as well as in our neighborhoods, communities, the country and the world) requires one step at a time.  Each step, for each person, is the most radical step that a person can take.
